Efficient Drainage Systems in Parking Lots (Willet Science Center, Mercer University)

As my lab assignment was to measure the lengths of the Willet Science Center parking lot to assess the reasons needed to calculate the volume of rainfall for this particularly designed lot. Water is probably the greatest cause of distress in a paved structure, and the lot sits on a slope, so when stormwater comes down, there are areas that may have the most build up of rain, causing erosion and build up of pollutants. To minimize stormwater runoff in parking lots, systems such as grate inlets, gutters, and curbs are installed a particular way to efficiently avoid high levels of water building up. Here is a picture of Willet Science Center parking lot, exhibiting where the location of the drainage systems of the parking lot.
